Annual Report 2007

Statement From The Chairman and Executive Director

This year's Annual Report tells the story of a little girl and her family and the challenges that life presents to them. It is also a story about the profound impact that a single act of kindness — a small gift — can have in the life of a person and how, in turn, that person can make a difference in the lives of many others.

While this is a work of fiction, the experiences of the characters are real and all too common for thousands of our less fortunate neighbors. The services the family receives are actual services offered by TVCCA; assistance paying fuel bills, child development, emergency food provision, tax preparation, financial literacy training, holiday toy distribution, employment and training, and housing are just a few of the many services made possible through our $20 million program base. Our 425 compassionate, hard-working, and devoted staff ensures that high quality services are delivered daily to individuals and families in need. People of all ages - from infants to frail homebound elders - have benefited from our programs since 1965.

Currently the TVCCA Board of Trustees and agency staff are updating and revising our strategic plan. We are doing this under a process we are calling TVCCA Move the Mountain Transformational Leadership. This effort will take most of 2007; the strategies that result will be implemented beginning in 2008. What is different for us in this strategic planning process is the focus. While we spend time each day administering grants and contract services, we are now focusing on the bigger picture of poverty in our communities.

The process has us asking challenging questions:

  • What are we doing to address issues of poverty in our communities?
  • What steps are we taking to engage Board and staff in our discussions and strategies?
  • What conversations are we having with other community partners and leaders?
  • What approaches are we taking with our local, state and national legislators?

As a result of this effort we have developed our Preferred Future:

  • People are thriving. All people are valued, contributing, and empowered members of our society.
  • TVCCA is a respected, results-oriented, innovative, (national) leader for anti-poverty solutions and a catalyst for community change.
  • Communities and their leaders recognize the value of all people.
  • Communities are healthy, thriving, safe, affordable places for ALL people to live, work, grow, and play.

We are working on high impact strategies that will enable our staff to lead the conversations, our Board to convene dialogues, and our communities to benefit from a process that strives to ensure that all individuals in our community have opportunities for better lives.

We hope you enjoy our 2007 Annual Report. May the story that unfolds over the next pages bring you to a greater understanding of what TVCCA does for the community and how we help people overcome poverty.

May the story also engage you and encourage you to be part of our conversations for solutions. We are hopeful that with your support we can ensure that the circumstances of the people in this story occur only in the realm of fiction and that together, we can offer families in our community the reality of a brighter, more promising tomorrow.

Sincerely,
Kathleen McCarty, Chairman of the Board
Deborah Monahan, Executive Director
