8 RSVP volunteers participated in an event for Read Across America Day celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday held at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London. The national event was created in 1998 in order to get children excited about reading. The day began with an all school meeting during which students mentioned their favorite Dr. Seuss book and why, two teachers dressed in character read a Dr. Seuss book and a poem was recited. Following the assembly each volunteer went to a second grade classroom and read the Dr. Seuss book they had picked out. The children were very grateful to have the volunteers read to them and wrote thank you letters to the volunteers expressing their appreciation. The volunteers enjoyed the event and many will be returning to read on a regular base.
