On January 20th 7 RSVP volunteers participated in an event at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London. 3 volunteers were in a 4th grade classroom with 21 children and 4 were in a 4th grade classroom with 20 children. The event started with introductions from both the volunteers and children. Each volunteer shared how the life of Dr. King impacted them. One volunteer read a book to the class entitled This is the Dream, the book depicted life before the civil rights movement and life afterwards. Each student received a packet that included a picture of Dr. King and his family, his biography, a fill in the blank speech, the full speech and 2 activities. The class listened attentively and filled in the blanks on their sheet as the “I Have a Dream” speech was read. After the speech was read the 2nd graders drew a picture of their dream world and the 4th graders broke into groups and created their own I Have a Dream speech. Once completed each student proudly presented their dreams to the rest of the class. The event lead to a lot of discussion with the students and a strengthened partnership with the school. Our volunteers will be going back throughout the year to read to the students and participate in other activities.
