Grandparent Mentoring Program

(AKA Foster Grandparent Program) – Join our team of volunteers throughout Eastern Connecticut to make a difference in the life of a child. Current volunteers enjoy feeling connected to the children they serve and often speak with smiles as they share about their time in the classroom with students and teachers.

Self Esteem

Volunteers experience a higher level of self-esteem often credited to continued participation in community service.

Reimbursement

Volunteers receive mileage or transportation cost reimbursement and are eligible to receive a non-taxable stipend without an impact on other services they may receive.

Insurance

Volunteers are insured while on the job.

Program Requirements

  1. Spend 15 or more hours a week in a day care, Head Start Program, or elementary school classroom
  2. Age 55 or older and low-income
  3. Work one-on-one or with small groups of young children and students under the supervision of a teacher.
  4. Model social skills, encourage age appropriate interaction & participation, and comfort & encourage a child.
  5. Reinforce teaching in academic areas.
  6. Play games, model language with songs & conversation
